The Chairman's Scholarship for Excellence in Business Leadership

This scholarship seeks to celebrate leadership in the private or public sector by recognizing African business leaders with a track record of leading both in the workplace and the community.

Inaugural Chairman’s Scholar

Congratulations to, Zimbabwean lawyer, Zanudeen Makorie the first recipient of ALUSB’s Chairman’s Scholarship for Excellence in Business Leadership. This year we received thousands of applications and have been impressed by the breadth of talent on the continent, which has confirmed our belief that this is indeed the African Century.

Zanudeen Makorie

Zanudeen Makorie is the General Counsel and Group Company Secretary of RioZim Limited, a former subsidiary of Rio Tinto Global and one of the leading resources-based listed companies in Zimbabwe. His responsibilities include managing the company’s litigation portfolio and leading the company’s corporate and strategic policy. Prior to his role at RioZim, Mr. Makorie was a Partner at Coghlan, Welsh and Guest, one of Zimbabwe’s top corporate and litigation law firms, where he was admitted into Partnership at the age of 27, becoming one of the youngest partners in the 100-year history of the firm. He is a member of the International Bar Association and the Law Society of Zimbabwe. He is also a contributor and author on WLSA Zimbabwe Property and Inheritance Rights Journal, with his focus being on property rights. Mr. Makorie holds a Bachelor of Laws (Hons.) from the University of Zimbabwe and a certificate in mineral resource management.”

Teniola Adejuwon

Teniola Adejuwon is the Co-Founder and Creative Director of Podozi Inc, a beauty-tech startup for people of colour. In January 2016, Podozi was admitted into a 4-month accelerator program with 500 Startups as its first Nigerian investment. Additionally, Ms Adejuwon is the Executive Director of Beauty by Nature Inc, a brand consultancy, strategy and experience boutique for beauty companies across Africa. Previously, Ms Adejuwon was Managing Partner at Makeup In Nigeria Conference (MINC) where her responsibilities included creating the MINC concept, from ideation to execution. She is passionate about social initiatives and was a core member of #Danacrashaction, an initiative to support victims of the 2012 Dana Air crash in Nigeria. She holds a bachelor’s degree in History and International Relations from Lagos State University and a Diploma in the French Language from the Nigerian French Language Village.

Sidumiso Dahlia Sibanda is the Managing Director of Sponsors for Educational Opportunity (SEO) Africa, a non-profit leadership development organisation, which identifies, trains and mentors West African students for internships and graduate programmes in the UK and Ghana. Under Ms. Sibanda’s leadership, the organisation has doubled its client base through extending its sector coverage beyond Investment Banking into the Energy, Power and Telecoms sectors, and she continues to expand its geographic footprint beyond West Africa, into East and Southern Africa. Prior to her current position, she worked in Mergers, Acquisitions and Debt Advisory at Houlihan Lokey and at the Rothschild Group, and in the FX and Money Markets team in HSBC’s Global Markets division, all in the United Kingdom. Ms. Sibanda holds a Master of Engineering in Chemical Engineering & Chemistry from the University of Sheffield, United Kingdom.

He joined GE in 2012 as an Associate Auditor, and was later promoted to become Commercial Finance Manager in 2014, a position he held until October 2016 when he became a Senior Business Development Manager, where he oversees the execution of the Nigeria Railway concession among other responsibilities. Prior to his current position, Mr. Ashcroft took on a project that helped GE enter a public private partnership with the Nigerian Government; where he built a business case that saw the GE global CEO enter into further discussions about the project with both the Nigerian President and the Minister of Transportation. Prior to joining GE, he worked for 4 years at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) as an auditor. Mr. Ashcroft holds a bachelor’s degree in Architecture from the Federal University of Technology Minna, Nigeria, and he is also a Chartered Accountant registered with ACCA.

Since her appointment 11 months ago, she has successfully led the implementation of the largest restructuring process in the history of Rwanda, with minimal adverse market impact and is now driving the roll out of a new banking channel. Prior to joining Atlas Mara Bank, Ms. Huni was a Senior Manager at KPMG in Management Consulting. Her consultancy background spans 13 African countries, including key regional economies such as Nigeria, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda. Ms. Huni holds a post graduate degree in Psychology from the University of South Africa, post graduate qualifications in Business Management, and a Bachelor of Social Sciences in Psychology and Industrial Sociology from the University of Cape Town
